Flu Shots and Stage East!

Just a short reminder that there are still a few tickets left for Stage East.  These must be purchased by tomorrow (Friday, October 31).  They can be purchased at the Mountain View Credit Union in Beiseker and at Simply Food for Thought, also in Beiseker.  It looks like a good show again this year. I hope to see you there!

I missed the flu shot clinic which was held last Monday at the Golden Years Club.  There are still folks out there who don't believe in the flu shot.

I get one every year, I figure it's free and what the heck.  The good news is that our pharmacist is giving flu shots at the Beiseker Pharmacy (on Main Street) this year;  no appointment needed!

Seniors' Tea coming up!

Mark down Thursday afternoon, June 20 on your calendar!  That's when the Beiseker Station Museum Society is holding their annual Seniors' Tea. 

We'll have tea and coffee, along with some goodies to eat.  Add to that some lively entertainment, and you've got a great afternoon!  This year we're celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Beiseker CPR Station which now houses the Beiseker Village Office and the Beiseker Station Museum.

The activities start at 2:00 p.m. in the Golden Years Town & Country Club on Fifth Street across from the Arena, here in Beautiful Downtown Beiseker!

Seniors Tea

I was back from Ottawa in time to attend the annual Seniors Tea hosted by the Beiseker Station Museum Society at the Golden Years Town and Country Club.  Our theme this year was the honouring of the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede!  All the society members were decked out in their western finery.  Coffee, Tea and cake was served. 

Entertainment was provided by our very own Verlin Rau.  Verlin is a very talented singer and song writer and one of Beiseker's best kept secrets!  I always enjoy his music whenever I get a chance to hear him.  He sung some of the standard old time favorites plus a bunch from his own works from his recently released CD!  I  think everyone really enjoyed themselves.

The Seniors' Tea is held every year in mid June. It is put on by the Beiseker Station Museum Society which operates our own Museum in the train station, which also houses the Village Office. For many years the Tea was held in the lower museum exhibit hall at the station, but the senior's center makes a far better venue.  It's a perfect chance to see people you haven't seen maybe all winter and catch up on all the local happenings and gossip!

If you've never attened, make a mental note to come next year.

Water line repairs and Lam family luncheon

In case you haven't heard, we were given an extra day with water on.  The Aqua 7 water line will be shut off tonight.  I hope you all got your notice from the Village Office.  There are a number of suggestions there on how you might conserve water over the next few days.  I'll keep you posted on how the repairs are coming.

On Monday I attended a most enjoyable luncheon at the Golden Years Club.  The Lam family came out to visit again.  The Lams were from Viet Nam.  They were forced to leave their homeland and immigrate to Canada in April of 1980. 

They were sponsored by a group from Beiseker and their first Canadian home was here in our village!  They have since moved into the city, but they still have fond memories of their first encounter with us Canadians.  They still talk about this very positive smiling lady in a red outfit from Beiseker (Mrs. Vera Schmaltz) making them feel like they were coming home! I was fortunate to meet them back then, too.  Their kids came to Beiseker Community School.  I'm sure they were all in culture shock!    Those kids are all grown up now with kids of their own, three generations of them! 

They are all truly Canadians.   It was wonderful to see them all again.  They promised to come back next year around this same time.  I'm already looking forward to it!

Issue #7: Recreation Opportunities for All

For its size Beiseker has some of the best recreatioal opportunities around, yet there are still those in the Village who tell me, "there's nothin' to do here!".

If you live in Beiseker you can: play hockey, play baseball, attend beavers/cubs & scouts (in Irricana), take martial arts, skateboard, rollerblade or BMX, use the Library, play school sports, take part in summer fun, swim in Acme, learn to skydive, get your pilots' licence, join the Station Museum or the Centennial Railway Museum, join the Golden Years Town & Country Club, take part in Stage East Dinner Theatre, use an ATV, Quad, or snowmobile, skate, take part in Continuing Ed or Adult Ed, join a needle-craft club, go bowling (in Airdrie), join a service club, join the Chamber of Commerce, join the Royal Canadian Legion (in Acme), join the motorcycle club, join a 4H Club, become a part of Pioneer Acres in Irricana, Golf (in Acme, Driving Range here), join a church group (here or in Acme or Irricana), go bicycling, go jogging, curling (in Acme or Irricana), join a car club, volunteer at Beiseker Recycling, and others!

If re-elected I will help identify the concerns of those who feel there is nothing to do here. It may require a new facility or an existing facility upgrade, or maybe just a place where those with a like interest can meet and plan!
